Doubt, A Parable

Pacific Theatre completes its Shanley series with a production of Doubt, A Parable. This is a tale of a priest who is accused of a wrong-doing by a nun, but did he really do it? Did she see something that she thought she saw or wanted to see? Is there reasonable doubt? This is a great piece of theatre that I'm glad Pacific Theatre has decided to bring to our city. Runs all month until March 31!

Hope you manage to find some fun this weekend!

Secrets of a Soccer Mom

This play reminds me why I never want to have children, but at the same time honours those who do and who do it well. Here we have kids screaming, mothers yelling, and a chaotic and hectic opening to a show that is probably more true to life than you'd think. Secrets of a Soccer Mom takes place on a cloudy afternoon in a soccer field, where three gossipy and judgmental women have gathered to watch and play soccer with their kids. However, there's more action on the sidelines than there is on the field.

The play touches upon all different levels of motherhood. Whether it's the competitiveness they have with one another or the coming together to form a community, it's the strength they have as women that really bonds them. I wished there was more secrets and less soccer, but that's the playwright's fault. The production itself does a good job in assaulting the ears with loud referee whistles and the constant sideline screams - at first a bit off-putting, but later becoming the perfect and realistic backdrop to what these women must deal with on a regular basis.

Lest it become a Sex and the City on a soccer field, Secrets is more about finding the woman beyond the parent, and beyond that, finding yourself. It's a love letter to the moms who work, the moms who volunteer their time, the moms who have sex, the moms who don't, the moms who have affairs, the moms with absent husbands, the moms who have left their other lives behind for this one. It's an ode to a way of life that isn't for everyone, and for those who do choose to be a parent, hats off to you!

Tammy Bentz, Jessica Heafey, and Jenny Mitchell play the occasionally high-strung LuluLemon-clad mothers in this suburban play. Secrets of a Soccer Mom runs until March 10 at the Presentation House Theatre.

Ignorance

Is there really such a thing as happiness? And if so, can it be achieved? Should it be achieved? Or is it something that's created to help us aspire for something more, to continue to do more? Or is the ultimate goal to just be content?

These are some of the thought-provoking questions brought up at Ignorance, a puppet show currently on at the Cultch. In a word, this show is wonderful. It has humour and intelligence, and yes it has puppets. I've seen other puppet shows at the Cultch before, such as Ronnie Burkett's work, which is dark and amazing. Kudos to The Cultch for continuing to work with these artists, such as The Old Trout Puppet Workshop who are responsible for bringing us the world premiere of Ignorance here in Vancouver. In fact, the past few shows I have seen at the Cultch have all been a breath of fresh air and have definitely added to the city's theatre scene.

Ignorance is a visual masterpiece; an entertaining piece of art that will have you grinning from ear to ear. The audience was in stitches as we were taken back to the early days of civilization, where even then mankind was just trying to find happiness. With near-flawless execution, the three puppeteers glide seamlessly from role to role, from prehistoric to modern day, all to a stunning soundtrack and a hilarious documentary-style voice over narrating all the action.

Ignorance plays at The Cultch now until March 10! Tickets from $16! Don't miss it!
