Anton May provides a nuanced performance as his character of David, while Kwaku Okyere is explosive as the bully Bobby. Savion Roach plays the roommate of our lead character and brought tears to my eyes with his portrayal of kindness. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbbw0a2pzOpUnZ3wMiksypnEr8RlfXh0wIltV2KVIO1kS8npZ4W3Gik-bfwHSLn_5e0CLIRRKst6TLzL5o8D95XDTBwKZHBSfVzpkIu4o2fno9BKae35VQZ30ARSlrA4XIHANgg0jrGD76opC1PzFRP8EhKMTddPPi1xCvRZQTE2IQF11FgifAAVjf/s997/0208-theatre-review-choir-boy-1.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="750" data-original-width="997" height="241" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbbw0a2pzOpUnZ3wMiksypnEr8RlfXh0wIltV2KVIO1kS8npZ4W3Gik-bfwHSLn_5e0CLIRRKst6TLzL5o8D95XDTBwKZHBSfVzpkIu4o2fno9BKae35VQZ30ARSlrA4XIHANgg0jrGD76opC1PzFRP8EhKMTddPPi1xCvRZQTE2IQF11FgifAAVjf/s320/0208-theatre-review-choir-boy-1.webp" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>The show was emotional and moving, with a superb set (designed by Rachel Forbes) that transformed amidst acapella hymns sung by the cast. The singing was transcendent. It's not a musical, mind you. It's a play, with songs in it. At 1 hour and 45 minutes with no intermission, Choir Boy had me completely captivated and is quite likely the best thing I've ever seen put on by the Arts Club at the Stanley Theatre. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0SoAUMPuma5HMn7g0ACEkDYNUaMrsfnDK3Lum4rIfXrmu-Y_5EwCEFXnUHV-jknIvGXoQYJdHzL0ojXgxAS173RIZiHiCjs_8TjMj21td-s56K9eDcnNmXZe76RDvXwRl0OMCxtMNNc8MULIBFIPPzhtLG8RE_HzyJHzGtNsGo32TzglxsQ-jDxxM/s1000/a7r00602-s.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="664" data-original-width="1000" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg0SoAUMPuma5HMn7g0ACEkDYNUaMrsfnDK3Lum4rIfXrmu-Y_5EwCEFXnUHV-jknIvGXoQYJdHzL0ojXgxAS173RIZiHiCjs_8TjMj21td-s56K9eDcnNmXZe76RDvXwRl0OMCxtMNNc8MULIBFIPPzhtLG8RE_HzyJHzGtNsGo32TzglxsQ-jDxxM/s320/a7r00602-s.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>The songs and the story were both simply beautiful. With brilliant production design by Candelario Andrade, we are transported into a fairy tale land that holds some shocks and surprises for you. </p><p>Some may not know this, but Into the Woods can be looked at as an AIDS parable. Written at the height of the epidemic, Sondheim pulled on the environment around him to create a show that deals with grief, loss, and consequence. Of course, it can also be enjoyed on a more superficial level too, with the story of the Baker and his Wife trying to have a child by undoing a curse put on them by their neighbouring witch. Throw in some fairy tale favourites like Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack and the Beanstalk, and Rapunzel, and this could very well be fun for the whole family! </p><p>A definite crowd favourite on opening night was Brynna Drummond, who does double duty as both the lecherous Big Bad Wolf and one of the smarmy Prince Charmings. </p><p><a href="https://langara.ca/studio-58/current-season/current-2023-into-the-woods.html" target="_blank">Into The Woods</a> is on now at Studio 58 until February 18! </p><p><br /></p>FunFunVancouver!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06663950415433228336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6843136060603796345.post-46358817438844016032024-01-28T19:32:00.000-08:002024-01-28T19:32:24.679-08:00Broadway Across Canada: Mean Girls<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9XxLGfxIIDsMnGTrKeqndmAX0w5YPYfXZ7ZAmrG9AqsBWCSiLrWcOgOqZCsYr8KDS3siUGNq9mAyCVG1qlIu4UApJfI40JNgKp41Rf-ba7rcB4TWduqvlMlZaH830csM-LGc7jYmPi0Vs38bP9B4S4EVxx8ITmZfhQL-Ilu7qMd6X_uZWW9EW1hht/s1095/MG-TRIO_TOUR_TS_102021_RGB_FINAL_FULL_SIZE-copy.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1095" data-original-width="690" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9XxLGfxIIDsMnGTrKeqndmAX0w5YPYfXZ7ZAmrG9AqsBWCSiLrWcOgOqZCsYr8KDS3siUGNq9mAyCVG1qlIu4UApJfI40JNgKp41Rf-ba7rcB4TWduqvlMlZaH830csM-LGc7jYmPi0Vs38bP9B4S4EVxx8ITmZfhQL-Ilu7qMd6X_uZWW9EW1hht/s320/MG-TRIO_TOUR_TS_102021_RGB_FINAL_FULL_SIZE-copy.jpeg" width="202" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Well my first show of the new year was Broadway Across Canada's <i>Mean Girls</i> at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre. I am not a fan of the original movie, so maybe this musical was not meant for me. There were many in the audience dressed in pink and seemed to be super fans of the film. Basically, I found the show to be fairly meh. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The songs were not memorable, and the storyline was even less entertaining for me than the movie was. At least the movie had the charisma of Rachel McAdams in it. The cast here were fine, but the material is just too fluff for my liking. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I do applaud <a href="https://vancouver.broadway.com/" target="_blank">Broadway Across Canada</a> for stepping up and trying to bring new stuff on tour such as shows like this and not the usual regular Les Miserables / Phantom of the Opera combos. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Having caught the Saturday matinee yesterday, there was one memorable moment in the show that was unplanned when one of the set pieces flew off and hit the actress playing Gretchen in the face. The curtains came down and we had an unexpected intermission, with the understudy taking the stage after the show resumed. Assuming it was Kristen Amanda Smith who was injured, hopefully she is doing okay. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><br /><p></p>FunFunVancouver!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06663950415433228336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6843136060603796345.post-43665054911845575352023-11-28T14:17:00.000-08:002023-11-28T14:17:56.451-08:00East Van Panto: Beauty and the Beast <p>This was only my second year of taking in the East Van Panto, and this tale as old as time did not disappoint with its take on the classic Beauty and the Beast, with its annual East Van spin. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3oBlvhJRVWIKYuB8dfkycQgWvFGjSGTUtM06U61bO1gONeyzM4goFIEygiPOBbZTlHEBpxvpMZsfI-eH_lrIfCqO9fbvQcGLe14DzKjafyKzkpwvyApFOugHC8xhvbnz23VsUDIQ46CdRx_8IRwt2V5gwzOA0XIvWxXpYYPLfcJ5CpenNeH16ikih/s1919/unnamed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1919" data-original-width="1080" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3oBlvhJRVWIKYuB8dfkycQgWvFGjSGTUtM06U61bO1gONeyzM4goFIEygiPOBbZTlHEBpxvpMZsfI-eH_lrIfCqO9fbvQcGLe14DzKjafyKzkpwvyApFOugHC8xhvbnz23VsUDIQ46CdRx_8IRwt2V5gwzOA0XIvWxXpYYPLfcJ5CpenNeH16ikih/s320/unnamed.jpg" width="180" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Everything is familiar but just slightly off. What exactly was I in for? It sounded welcoming but at the same time, an unsettling feeling of darkness. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQMI2dbFf9maOrlg0j1nf7QfmkjCR68N5Ja9LZDElW4_jrX7e_xSC1zJRToT8BPxhiidv_OlZ7zH9RNrlcUpqcWmzlStAZJo5Ua66IJ2ZOFiZWyEB7nESPsqc_B0uno5fej82aejWAdFfcwCLvaHPGdxIoy5OcX8JPqrvhPYp_g4e_mLIR_1B6osMC/s640/hbmsily.webp" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="360" data-original-width="640" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQMI2dbFf9maOrlg0j1nf7QfmkjCR68N5Ja9LZDElW4_jrX7e_xSC1zJRToT8BPxhiidv_OlZ7zH9RNrlcUpqcWmzlStAZJo5Ua66IJ2ZOFiZWyEB7nESPsqc_B0uno5fej82aejWAdFfcwCLvaHPGdxIoy5OcX8JPqrvhPYp_g4e_mLIR_1B6osMC/s320/hbmsily.webp" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div>What follows is a play that unravels like an onion, layer after layer. reflecting on just some of the many roads one can take to end up on the street.
By singing these stories we may find them easier to hear. But really, it’s
about pigeons.<o:p></o:p></p><p><br /></p><p><a href="https://www.vancouverfringe.com/events/lets-talk-about-your-death/" target="_blank">Let's Talk About Your Death</a></p><p class="MsoNormal">September 7, 2023 5.00pm<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">September 10, 2023 5.15pm<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">September 11, 2023 7.00pm<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">September 13, 2023 7.15pm<o:p></o:p></p><p class="MsoNormal">September 16, 2023 10.50pm<o:p></o:p></p><p>

I remember heading to Trout Lake for the Summer solstice and being immersed into a magical land of fairies and sirens singing in the trees, while being surrounded by a plethora of creative home-made lanterns. </p><p>That's why I was intrigued to find out that they do still have a lantern celebration in the summer at Trout Lake, so I ventured out last night to attend it. Instead of a full on festival, it's a procession, led by a joyful band of musicians and lantern-folk. Everyone jostled behind them, as we all made our way around the lake, following our pied piper of the night. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnV8htwq97dZN6yDAKylSwSzfaWKSNUjkbnPgG4AVIUTkQRWYibkiNnGWxYNLpYdMa1osnrPmYcNq2CMzFYUADZNOoxdAVzPkVa_ru5jgOKtKAbQuLB-3UZywJ73LJ1uu7Va7R4DeGAubCqx-HptAvDDhM9V3D8oZ4OmOKPNSWZkuOVq-xBBc8mdKt/s2080/1180D8AF-81E6-46F7-80DE-D215ACBF86C2.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2080" data-original-width="1170" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnV8htwq97dZN6yDAKylSwSzfaWKSNUjkbnPgG4AVIUTkQRWYibkiNnGWxYNLpYdMa1osnrPmYcNq2CMzFYUADZNOoxdAVzPkVa_ru5jgOKtKAbQuLB-3UZywJ73LJ1uu7Va7R4DeGAubCqx-HptAvDDhM9V3D8oZ4OmOKPNSWZkuOVq-xBBc8mdKt/s320/1180D8AF-81E6-46F7-80DE-D215ACBF86C2.JPG" width="180" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQFZqOV0NlLFvl72PGwZPaZHsKViZJ7IMcRMAI90SpcftxsRM1T84LkYUg7CBoMYiMWpFIBQcyS-dc4xFYyeLZ6VVbWwmnrVLeV4nGRRSOoYcTzcAAUvgXi8fDf7IXYs3hdqV1MEq3tJWMmE8o3I5f_UitA3aErzu6d88294O2lAC-IzZ2Grcg5lgG/s2080/04623BE5-BB79-4832-8349-EEBC02964661.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2080" data-original-width="1170" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQFZqOV0NlLFvl72PGwZPaZHsKViZJ7IMcRMAI90SpcftxsRM1T84LkYUg7CBoMYiMWpFIBQcyS-dc4xFYyeLZ6VVbWwmnrVLeV4nGRRSOoYcTzcAAUvgXi8fDf7IXYs3hdqV1MEq3tJWMmE8o3I5f_UitA3aErzu6d88294O2lAC-IzZ2Grcg5lgG/s320/04623BE5-BB79-4832-8349-EEBC02964661.JPG" width="180" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl5W3nBIW5-5gRXiWThx0yB1qxrs5Fa61ltXO6YDN86EgpYbA5utvwJu9rBI935N9x8A_GXreElwGG8bhBVbInwDSHa9rJOiQXt-232oEWivWJNjOPJlXqulbKPpH4iA-bgWRd6c-rrJXr-nfb1Q3swMA4IWcVYk34AuvxCKsinWqAE91ONhcz89RH/s4032/B29D8BB8-9431-429E-87FD-5F4A6DE90AB8.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhl5W3nBIW5-5gRXiWThx0yB1qxrs5Fa61ltXO6YDN86EgpYbA5utvwJu9rBI935N9x8A_GXreElwGG8bhBVbInwDSHa9rJOiQXt-232oEWivWJNjOPJlXqulbKPpH4iA-bgWRd6c-rrJXr-nfb1Q3swMA4IWcVYk34AuvxCKsinWqAE91ONhcz89RH/s320/B29D8BB8-9431-429E-87FD-5F4A6DE90AB8.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvG2YRNsv5xgUpxqPs-p8MuTK18qmpgbTweQwh7yG69d0_2NRB-BC_Q-f5l4KR4zZobGgFn2UUI9NcTNbt5_d8U_S7-taJ-cpl72NmA-lbUbkyArfBGiWETVN8suDrTanws6Lh_phMHI_qiZY6qLq9yS7mmi7KfOYsN8MEY7QKY_MvbxQnXxBdVSns/s4032/IMG_8710.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvG2YRNsv5xgUpxqPs-p8MuTK18qmpgbTweQwh7yG69d0_2NRB-BC_Q-f5l4KR4zZobGgFn2UUI9NcTNbt5_d8U_S7-taJ-cpl72NmA-lbUbkyArfBGiWETVN8suDrTanws6Lh_phMHI_qiZY6qLq9yS7mmi7KfOYsN8MEY7QKY_MvbxQnXxBdVSns/s320/IMG_8710.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p><p><br /></p><p><br /></p>FunFunVancouver!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06663950415433228336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6843136060603796345.post-39199078303866818972023-07-23T16:52:00.003-07:002023-07-23T16:52:23.693-07:00Theatre Under the Stars: Matilda<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE6TaImXiRCbDjAPzemQTpS3m1ZsVhuPQKFFXiy3XrP9Ov8uNPMFfnCyG6QNTVFkg0-0rx4VYCP8eLvkTYSM7Fuoj8VbK4cu4o9oL9_Rm3jvbOXtucmGWrGUFw7nk6WSIW-08Ny7vlXz0B8BkCaU1uYq5zIIqiX6E7bYn6XVdAIZevGO3lEHCzVnwD/s2400/2vfu26pr.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1564" data-original-width="2400" height="209" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjE6TaImXiRCbDjAPzemQTpS3m1ZsVhuPQKFFXiy3XrP9Ov8uNPMFfnCyG6QNTVFkg0-0rx4VYCP8eLvkTYSM7Fuoj8VbK4cu4o9oL9_Rm3jvbOXtucmGWrGUFw7nk6WSIW-08Ny7vlXz0B8BkCaU1uYq5zIIqiX6E7bYn6XVdAIZevGO3lEHCzVnwD/s320/2vfu26pr.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><p>The thought of going to a musical where much of the singing is done by children terrifies me. One, I had seen the movie The Prom on Netflix and thought it was terrible. I had friends tell me they've seen the Broadway production and that it was way better than the movie adaptation. Okay, fine. </p><p>The second reason is that I remember Theatre Under the Stars from many years ago when I would go to a show and be disappointed, though I have heard that they have gotten a lot better since the days I used to attend. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWYjDtim_BPrB57uOnQZlgIQuJFQBZEgzPiD76JIg0_k8mTlbtptO4u8x_niIqqBrX8Uz-oM-JiXBOkdSFTJebRckd4pmGCbVqecBNENlktMe1L2ZQ2iuMBABEnXCl_BcsJdMZcPjupObeazJTXigDnCFqWQaqEnLYjrGCaSeahnSj-IVI0LtBciud/s2400/N7hxK2nk.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1563" data-original-width="2400" height="208" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWYjDtim_BPrB57uOnQZlgIQuJFQBZEgzPiD76JIg0_k8mTlbtptO4u8x_niIqqBrX8Uz-oM-JiXBOkdSFTJebRckd4pmGCbVqecBNENlktMe1L2ZQ2iuMBABEnXCl_BcsJdMZcPjupObeazJTXigDnCFqWQaqEnLYjrGCaSeahnSj-IVI0LtBciud/s320/N7hxK2nk.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><p>Opening night on Tuesday for The Prom was filled with excitement. It was a lovely summer evening. The perfect one really to go out and catch an outdoor musical theatre production. Ambiance, check. </p><p>When the show began, I still had my reservations. The material itself wasn't strong, at least not for an opening number. As someone who is not a parent, let alone a mother, would I be able to relate to this show? </p><p>Turns out, the plot revolves around that time in your life when you're about to make big life-changing decisions such as, "Should I take a risk and follow my dreams or go for stability?" Now that I could relate to! </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLC3hDwoXuqUu9Bj2JVTjXViyqPgJNt4JB3ffLxrdsu1xAUFNMo-ldjjZMosZ7OOefwoIT4U1OdjXLFvPdxtk2cOF0qqDuPYQinB7clA9yOmQoei6EObkGwLhUlQwbWQJadlIrd_vPfizuLWRGGdBt7vSe2yyv2fXZaL_PFopK3GnMBDhCZxQ08w/s2000/Unexpecting1.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1333" data-original-width="2000" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLC3hDwoXuqUu9Bj2JVTjXViyqPgJNt4JB3ffLxrdsu1xAUFNMo-ldjjZMosZ7OOefwoIT4U1OdjXLFvPdxtk2cOF0qqDuPYQinB7clA9yOmQoei6EObkGwLhUlQwbWQJadlIrd_vPfizuLWRGGdBt7vSe2yyv2fXZaL_PFopK3GnMBDhCZxQ08w/s320/Unexpecting1.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><p>We are introduced to a lesbian couple who are in the midst of a pending adoption. One woman is up for a big life altering job promotion, while her wife is torn between being a successful sellout commercial artist and staying true to her artistic visions. A circus with a storyline? I was intrigued to see how this was going to go and was extremely impressed with this piece. We are treated to scenes that involve a contortionist who elevates body dysmorphia to a whole new level or a laundry-folding session turned into a party for one. There are moments dealing with judgement when it comes to being a mom. The main thorough line is that high-wire balancing act of juggling motherhood with a career, the guilt of being seen as selfish and not a good maternal figure. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Xnoji5Ljm9ScN2-YgrUOasrODU0KlTExTiwwALgTWeAuVKISsxSiaZMpa1C0k7X69-JpUFg7fQ_xl6QGBOmD8zMzLZRjH8_1ZHhSHLK5maXTFViB2rao_49X9SepkSG0MZdWNXUxVsjQ-RBo7IuUfxqjAuyYlNwFMjRlQl2x4vjIO2wus_5-MQ/s4585/RAVEN_byStillHungry_Photocredit_Andy_Phillipson_24.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="4585" data-original-width="3056" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4Xnoji5Ljm9ScN2-YgrUOasrODU0KlTExTiwwALgTWeAuVKISsxSiaZMpa1C0k7X69-JpUFg7fQ_xl6QGBOmD8zMzLZRjH8_1ZHhSHLK5maXTFViB2rao_49X9SepkSG0MZdWNXUxVsjQ-RBo7IuUfxqjAuyYlNwFMjRlQl2x4vjIO2wus_5-MQ/s320/RAVEN_byStillHungry_Photocredit_Andy_Phillipson_24.jpg" width="213" /></a></div><p>There is so much in this tightly packed show runs; it an hour with no intermission. There were definitely some jokes that I laughed out loud to, and wish she had continued along those lines, especially with the more hard-core and politically incorrect stuff which I definitely appreciated. But she seemed a bit uncertain at some points, maybe it was nerves or maybe that's just her shtick? There were some animal analogies that took me a bit to get into, as I found it confusing at first. But given that the name of the show is BIRD, I was able to grasp onto what she was meaning. </p><p>Discovered by The Cultch's Executive Director Heather Redfern during a trip to Edinburgh, Kylie was introduced to the crowd by an enthusiastic Redfern, who exclaimed that the show "blew her socks off!" </p><p><a href="https://thecultch.com/event/bird-by-kylie-vincent/" target="_blank">Bird by Kylie Vincent </a>is on now at The Cultch all week until April 22. </p>FunFunVancouver!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06663950415433228336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6843136060603796345.post-9008503301040217322023-04-16T10:59:00.004-07:002023-04-16T10:59:31.476-07:00Crazy For You<p>"For its 31 st season <a href="https://royalcitymusicaltheatre.com/" target="_blank">Royal City Musical Theatre </a>(RCMT) is excited to present the riotously entertaining musical Crazy for You at the Massey Theatre from April 27 – May 14, 2023. In Taran Kootenhayoo's play, White Noise, that topic is front and centre in all its pain and ugliness and importance. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLPhWlrSePHIP3Dni9zpyMUxhM-e8OdXAwAgX6VJklTS79-bDvZ_EJ_fIQeYcUnfAuKs90JDK2wBBpZNFnWtl5fM7D3BqOkQCnPHGTu4bUxiZPnAX8yWdo6r6G5JMIwCMsJ6K6qK3zVvfxo2VJ1LC4RyHJhw0vcLvZtXfFB8-OY_VgJgyCgyHqEQ/s1200/white-noise-sq-web.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLPhWlrSePHIP3Dni9zpyMUxhM-e8OdXAwAgX6VJklTS79-bDvZ_EJ_fIQeYcUnfAuKs90JDK2wBBpZNFnWtl5fM7D3BqOkQCnPHGTu4bUxiZPnAX8yWdo6r6G5JMIwCMsJ6K6qK3zVvfxo2VJ1LC4RyHJhw0vcLvZtXfFB8-OY_VgJgyCgyHqEQ/s320/white-noise-sq-web.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div>In 90 minutes, with no intermission, we are introduced to two families living in the posh Point Grey area of Vancouver. One is a family of white settlers, and the other is a First Nations family. The two come together one night over dinner, where tempers flare, sparks fly, and a lot more than dinner is left out on the table. <div><br /></div><div>The show is a technical marvel, with projections and LED lights helping create an ambiance throughout the play. But it's the struggle to come to terms with what Truth and Reconciliation really means that is at the heart of it all. <p>I made the mistake of missing this show when it premiered last year, so don't miss out on this much needed and much appreciated revival. </p><p><a href="https://www.firehallartscentre.ca/event/white-noise/" target="_blank">White Noise</a> is on now at the Firehall Arts Centre until May 7, including several Pay What You Can nights. </p></div>FunFunVancouver!http://www.blogger.com/profile/06663950415433228336noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6843136060603796345.post-8894970593568849452023-04-15T09:47:00.003-07:002023-04-15T09:47:56.383-07:00Stupid F*cking Bird<p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg952GaiGP7f9yMOeC4VRmLxxtlhODrVHt7pHeuIxBoyzoWmGI4BaN7qzFq8vTxq6qYQebBUWUp5-rs4JCDrb_ikbWRzKJbA-D0Ab4fp45Dv9W7_2rYKD5a739J1Sy4RYwDVmvX4ZNSdC17CnmWyde1n6E8fLJUFxlAEbPjhHNeeYbQvE8qTCWiKQ/s6000/Ensemble%20of%20Stupid%20F_cking%20Bird.%20Photo%20by%20Emily%20Cooper_SFB_0218.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3576" data-original-width="6000" height="191" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg952GaiGP7f9yMOeC4VRmLxxtlhODrVHt7pHeuIxBoyzoWmGI4BaN7qzFq8vTxq6qYQebBUWUp5-rs4JCDrb_ikbWRzKJbA-D0Ab4fp45Dv9W7_2rYKD5a739J1Sy4RYwDVmvX4ZNSdC17CnmWyde1n6E8fLJUFxlAEbPjhHNeeYbQvE8qTCWiKQ/s320/Ensemble%20of%20Stupid%20F_cking%20Bird.%20Photo%20by%20Emily%20Cooper_SFB_0218.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Photo by Emily Cooper</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Based on Chekov's The Seagull is a contemporary retelling currently unfolding in Vancouver's East Side. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I went to see The Seagull on Broadway many years ago, and hated every single last minute of it.
